Buhari to launch construction of N18bn Transportation University in Daura

President Muhammadu Buhari is set to launch the construction of the University of Transportation in Daura, his Katsina hometown.

According to information on the website of the National Universities Commission (NUC), the varsity’s construction is expected to cost $50m (N18bn).

Bashir Ahmad, Buhari’s aide on new media, disclosed this in a tweet on Friday.

Ahmad said Buhari will on Monday participate in the “ground breaking” ceremony, adding that he had embarked on a four-day trip to the state ahead of the project’s commencement.

He also said that the trip would see him commission the Kwanar Gwante (Shargalle Road), which is off Kano-Daura Road in Katsina State.

According to Ahmad, Buhari would lay the foundation stone of the university before the China Civil and Construction Company (CCECC) begins construction.

“President Mohammadu Buhari is in Daura on a 4-day working visit to Katsina State. He will on Monday participate in a groundbreaking ceremony for the University of Transportation in Daura and commission the Kwanar Gwante (Shargalle Road), which is off Kano-Daura Road,” he wrote.

“Later next week, President Muhammadu Buhari will lay the foundation stone of the University of Transportation in Daura, Katsina State. The University will be built by China Civil and Construction Company (CCECC), and it will be the first specialised institution of its kind.”

In 2018, Rotimi Amaechi, former minister of transportation, had defended the choice of the president’s hometown as the location of the university — amid rising sentiments.

He added that Buhari never knew he would choose Daura.

According to him, the project comes as part of the federal government’s efforts to develop quality manpower that would manage railways and other transportation facilities across the country.
