SpaceUp Nigeria is a Space Un-conference, where participants decide the topics, schedule, and structure of the event. Un-conferences have been held about Technology, Science, and even cupcakes, but this is the first one focused on Space Exploration. SpaceUp Nigeria aims at bringing the networking part of traditional conferences onto the main stage.
The first SpaceUp event took place in San Diego, United states in 2010, and since then the world has seen dozens of SpaceUp Unconferences bringing together thousands of people to talk about the past, present and future of space exploration, how space science can make life better in Nigeria, Astronomy and everything related to that.
Africa is the only continent that has not experienced a SpaceUp event. SpaceUp Nigeria is the first of such events in Africa.
The University of Lagos is well situated and equipped to host the first SpaceUp in Nigeria and Africa as a whole. The event is planned to hold on Saturday, 28th April, 2018. It is expected to be a day event with two main features; the Un-Conference session during the day and the Astronomy
Barbeque in the evening.
The Unconference session will feature two main speakers of repute in their various fields, they would be respected captains of industry who can command media attention. Then there will be T minus 5 talks, also called ‘Ignite Talks’. Ignite talks are 5minutes presentation that are automated for the speaker, that way the speaker can’t go beyond the stipulated time slot.
It is usually a fun session when the speakers are trying to keep up with the slides while the audience is cheering them on. This gives way to a tea/coffee break. The unconference resumes into the Grid sessions.
During the Grid, the law of two feet applies i.e. – feel free to leave and join another session that interest you! In between the grid sessions, there will be Lunch.
The evening Astronomy Barbeque event will feature a renowned Astronomer in Nigeria who will enlighten the audience about the stars, constellations and relate it to the African folklore. There will be Night sky viewing and an artist/DJ who for the love of science, will do a live performance.
We plan to have at least three telescopes. Participants will be provided with food and SWAG bags.
