Late yesterday, we got information from the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) denying knowledge of the University of Jos management’s increase of school fees from 27, 400 to a whooping 45000 (all Naira). This of course came after the letter released and signed by the ASUU Chairman (Dr. Chris Piwuna) rejecting the outright molestation of students in their constituency.
Below is a credible quote from the ASUU University of Jos Chapter…
ASUU Speaks To students :
“we don’t know anything about the new school charges of 45000 naira, All we know is 27,400, we are just watching the management in their jamboree. Students should not pay 45,000 because that is not our resolution with the the school management that we know of”…
This raises a few questions in my mind: didn’t the University claim they consulted with Stakeholders before making this decision? Then who are the stakeholders?
Let me help you:
the stakeholders are
i. Students (SUG)
ii. Lecturers (ASUU)
iii. Parents
iv. Management
v. Government
The SUG came up to peacefully reject and deny these claims and we know how that story goes.
ASUU has released a letter denying the management’s plan and approach (check below for letter)
According to reports, only about 30 parents came to the “stakeholders meeting”. Assuming only half the admitted students in UNIJOS only had a single parent, then we should have expected about 12000 parents which means not up to 1% of the parents were represented at the meeting which means they can’t form a quorum.
The government led by Buhari promised Nigerian students free education. The FG/NUC directive also clearly stated school fees should not be more than 45000 (including acceptance fee. Check picture below).
This goes to show only the management is standing with this insane and pointless increase in school charges.
This is a call for every JOSSITES to remain resolute. We have received information about the agreement signed by the snitches calling themselves caretaker committee (our next post will address this issue). Everyone who considers himself a fighter for people’s interest and a UNIONIST must fight vehemently to reject this agreement.
WE ALSO HAVE REASON TO BELIEVE ASUU MIGHT GO ON A SHORT CLOSE DOWN OF THE SCHOOL ALONG WITH THE STUDENTS IF THERE’S NO REVERSAL OF THE SCHOOL CHARGES AGREEMENT.
